Arts by the Sea Festival is coming to Christchurch
July 22, 2022Meet the performers at PLAY Christchurch: Tit for Tat
August 16, 2022Distant Drums is a dynamic and thought provoking performance that tells the story of Reggae Sound System culture and its role in the fight for racial equality. A handcrafted bespoke sound system stands proudly on a statue plinth. As the speakers power up, digital screens appear within the stack and two performers transport the audience from Africa to the Caribbean until they finally arrive suitcase in hand on the shores of the UK. Written by Madu Messenger, narrated by Macka B, choreographed by Donald Edwards with a distinctive Dub soundtrack by Vibronics, Distant Drums promises to be an exhilarating performance not to be missed. Post show, Distant Drums transforms into an audio and visual art installation sharing a range of recollections on sound system culture from the most prolific names in the Dub. From smoke infested dances to hauling speakers into transit vans, come along and listen to these treasured voices that are so often unheard.
